We watched them illuminate the dark night sky with majestic wish-upon-a-star fireworks. And on the Rivers of America, they’ve invited us to become part of their world with the pageantry of princesses and pirates in Mickey’s imagination. They’ve even pulled us off the curbs of Main Street, U.S.A. and on to our feet — even though we felt a little embarrassed at first — to dance with some of our favorite characters. But nothing compares to the whole new castle projection show that the Parades and Spectaculars team from Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) just debuted at Tokyo Disneyland. High and low over the castle, a thrilling panorama and spectrum of nighttime effects mesmerizes audiences with Once Upon a Time at Tokyo Disneyland.

This fantastic and heartwarming performance transforms Cinderella Castle into a living storybook through projection mapping technology using 20 projectors, as well as lasers, search, lights and other special effects. This is the first time the projection mapping technology is being used at Tokyo Disney Resort.

The projections allow WDI to weave in stories as never before. Once Upon a Time begins with Tinker Bell sprinkling pixie dust over Cinderella Castle, which suddenly turns into a towering storybook. The audience hears Mrs. Potts from the Beauty and the Beast reading some bedtime stories to her son, Chip. With each turn of the “page,” a different Disney story appears, and Guests are taken on a fantastic journey through the world of Disney.

Because we know everyone can’t just jump on a plane and head to Tokyo Disneyland, we’ve compiled some notes from the show so you can get a feel of how the Once Upon a Time story unfolds.

“Tell me a story!” Chip asks his mother and Mrs. Potts begins to tell stories that begin with “Once upon a time…” As she speaks, the pages of the towering storybook change to show scenes from various Disney stories.
Song: “Once Upon a Time.”

Alice in Wonderland
Alice finds herself in Wonderland as she runs after the White Rabbit. There she’s chased by the Card Soldiers of the Queen of Hearts and meets the Mad Hatter and his pals at a whimsical tea party.
Songs: “Alice in Wonderland,” “I’m Late,” and “A Very Merry Unbirthday (The Unbirthday Song)”

Cinderella Castle is wrapped up in the magical golden flower as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider gaze at the starry sky from their boat. Lanterns then float up into the night.
Songs: “Tangled,” “I See the Light,”

Appearing before Cinderella as she weeps, her Fairy Godmother casts a magical spell. The little birds and mice help make her dress. And she dances gracefully with Prince Charming.
Songs: “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo,” and “So This Is Love”

Peter Pan
Peter Pan and the children fly through the night sky over London as Big Ben tolls on their way to Never Land.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
In a cottage deep in the woods, the Seven Dwarfs are cheerfully dancing with Snow White. When Dopey sneezes, the cottage seems to collapse, falling towards the audience.
